♣ HISTORY

Cleïs was born on the island of Crete around 600 BC to a rich merchant family as their first and only child. Due to their lack of sons, she was raised more freely than normal girls in Ancient Greek society were and given a complete education, learning to read and write and soon taking over secretary duties in her father's business. This was where her future husband, Ampelios, a low-ranking politician, first noticed her and approached her father about marriage. Without much say in the matter, Cleïs and Ampelios would be married and she was expected to retire from her duties to serve as his wife. However, this role suited Cleïs very poorly and she became increasingly depressed playing hostess, tending to the house and doing needlework. At the same time, she experienced a similar dissatisfaction among her female slaves and friends and as they observed how men ruled their surrounding world, an idea sparked with her. To create a community for only women, where women ruled and where women were in power. As she found herself pregnant, the idea became almost an obsession and she began making her preparations, in secret taking the money she had inherited from her family and buying land on the small, uninhabited island of Ntia, off Crete's coast. Upon discovering her plans, everyone thought she had gone insane. However, as she gave birth to her daughter, Andromeda, she one night left her husband along with a small group of other women and set off for Ntia where she had had constructors work on a small gathering of houses for them. This would be the peaceful beginnings of the Island of Only Women.

At her current canon point, Cleïs has been leader elect of Ntia for ten years and seen her small community of women thrive and grow. Not only have women joined them from all of Crete, but rumour has travelled of her project and women from all over Greece have journeyed to Ntia to find refuge. Andromeda, Cleïs' daughter, is now 11 years old and growing into a woman - as such, Cleïs has decided to author a series of letters to her that outlines the story of the women settlement, her relationship to the men in her life and her thoughts about the future for the island and the particular philosophy that has blossomed here.

♣ PERSONALITY

x Has received a thorough education and loves reading, so is well-versed in the ancient Greek writings from Aristotle to Plato to Sappho. Very intelligent and highly cultured.
x Through her father and later, her husband, she has been invested in the philosophical debates of her contemporaries as well as political life since she was rather young and though not allowed to participate due to her gender, she has tried to influence Greek society from the sideline as well as create a forum for discussion for her friends.
x Will do anything for her friends and before she had her daughter, they were her sole reason for fighting for a more just and equal world. The female population is as a whole her incentive for leaving Crete and build a new society.
x Is a loving mother and although she despises her husband's methods, is grateful to him for having given her Andromeda. She knows it takes two people to have a baby and as such, she has honoured his request of not divorcing him up until this point, although they no longer live together.
x Outside of her marriage to Ampelios, has never been in a romantic relationship and definitely not one that satisfied her. Romance matters less to her than her community.
x Is of a very practical nature, as she was brought up to take care of a big household, so being in charge and leading even large-scale projects comes easily to her.
